My husband and I went to Oahu last Feb. and we rented a car. I am glad we had the car because we could come and go as we pleased on our schedule. The only thing that was hard for us was finding our hotel the night we landed; it was a bit confusing in the Waikiki area with all the one way streets. If we go back to Oahu I will bring my GPS for the car.

Since you have a child I personally would rent a car. I don't like having to rely on the bus to get where I need to go.

ive taken the bus for 12 years when I was a kid until I graduated from high school. I **** the bus. people are rude, it stinks, its dirty, people **** on the bus (ive seen this happen at night time), people spit on the bus, people come on the bus smelling like BO and smoke!

If you have a baby I suggest you rent a car it may be expensive but its much better than riding the bus. and you dont have to wait for the bus if you get a car your on your own time.

The Good
-It's one of the best bus systems in the US
-Reliable
-AC

The Bad
-You gotta wait

The Ugly
-There are some strange people on the bus. Really.

There are buses everywhere on Oahu and you can get around the island with the use of the bus, but it's just having to transfer and remembering which bus to take to where that's a headache. I've only ridden the bus twice and I'd rather take my car.

An 18-month-old shouldn't be on a bus anyway. There are a lot of germs.

If your dad retired from the Military, then ask him about flying Space A. It might be hard to get a flight though and take a lot of time. From Travis AFB in California, it took almost 8 days for my grandparents to fly to Hawaii. Leaving Hawaii just took 2 days.

We used to live in Panama City Beach, FL so from FL to HI you would spend at least $800-1200 per person for the flight. Hotels range from $150-400 a night and then you add food, rental car, etc.....

I would estimate AT LEAST $10-12,000.

That's A LOT of money for a place that isn't exactly worth it, in my opinion. You can get just as pretty of a beach and lower cost of living if you go to Montery Bay, California (which is better than HI) or South Carolina.

I would do more research and find somewhere else to vacation.

Create a video blog...instantly.

Foodland is a great place to shop, and they have good lunch plates. Be sure to sign up for their Maika’i rewards card. Safeway is a great place to shop, and be sure to sign up for a Safeway Club card as well. K-Mart and Costco in Kahului are great places to shop. For economical dining I recommend Aloha Mixed Plate Lahaina and Paia Fish Market in Paia.

It cost my husband and me over $7K to go to Hawaii 2 years ago for 10 days. That was for TWO people, and we got the airfare from LAX dirt-cheap (used air miles, so it was practically free).

For 6 people for everything you're talking about (not including meals, activities, etc) I'd say at least $10K-$12K minimum.
