Following the Diet After Gastric Bypass

The gastric bypass diet is the food plan that is followed for 2 to 3 months after you have had weight loss surgery. Most people do not even consider the fact that the way they eat will change drastically. It is obvious that you will not be eating nearly as much as you did in the past, but most individuals do not realize that for a minimum of 2 weeks you will be consuming only liquids.

The first step of this diet is clear liquids and gelatin and is administered while you are in the hospital. The second step of the bariatric surgery diet consists of strained pureed foods, baby food and/or drinks high in protein. This part of the food plan will last 2 to 8 weeks depending on how you are feeling and how your recovery is progressing. Some people do not have an appetite for a few months.

After 8 weeks you can experiment with all foods, but keep in mind that meat and foods that have a course texture may be difficult to eat at first. They should be cut into small pieces and softened with liquid. Also, it should be noted that many people cannot tolerate sugar and foods that are high in fat. Start out slow and try very small amounts of foods you are having for the first time following your surgery.

For most people this will be a time of major change in their lives. In a few days time you will go from being able to consume thousands of calories in one sitting to being able to only consume an ounce of liquid at a time. The bariatric surgery high protein diet is temporary and will lead you to a new healthier body. Cherish this opportunity, but realize that the outcome is up to you. You have to take this tool and use it wisely.

A doctor should always be consulted before begining a new food plan.
