Getting around in oahu ?

metallica rocks asked:

I am going to Honolulu, Hawaii with my wife for 3 days. What is the cheapest and the most convenient way to go around and visit tourist places. Bus or Car rental or Cab ?
How is the frequency of Bus service ? Is it cheap ?

When my husband and I went to Oahu, we rented a car. It was not the cheapest because we had to pay a daily valet charge at our hotel. But for us it was the most convenient; we wanted to be on our schedule not the bus or the cabs. And if you decide to rent a car; if you have a GPS take it because there are alot of one way streets by Waikiki Beach and we drive around like 2 hours the night we landed trying to find our hotel because we could not find the correct one way street to turn on to get to it.

Oahu is so heavily populated that renting a car is more hassle than than it’s worth. We stay on Oahu at least once a year for 10-12 days, we have never rented a car, Public Transportation on Oahu is the Best! Buses run constantly…if you miss one another will be along shortly and they go pretty much everywhere you want to go. If you decide you want to go somewhere quicker than what the buses are running, nice Taxi’s are Always available. If you plan on going North Shore rent a car for a day, not the whole time. But I wouldn’t rent a car on Oahu. On the other Islands Yes, rent a car, but not on Oahu. Aloha a hui ho.

You will cover more ground with a car rental.

The Bus is a great system, yes, but I can’t deal with just waiting around for a bus to come. That’s a waste of some precious time.

TheBus(oahu’s city bus) is EXCELLENT. It is $2.00 per way (getting more and more expensive) and they have a bus come to a bus stop every 30 minutes. TheBus is one of America’s best city bus, and it goes to every city, every street. But cheapest, drive your self.
