Hawaii – Chinaman’s hat?

tackage asked:

Has anyone swam or paddled over to Chinaman’s hat? Is it worth exploring? How did you get there, is there a good kayak rental option? Thanks! Tom

My family has a backyard view of ChinaMans Hat. I believe you can paddle out there but there really is nothing. It’s basically just a big rock. It’s better to admire it from afar because once you get there you may be disappointed.

You would probably want to paddle if it was a must see destination for you. While the beach is highly enjoyable, swimming out that far can be both tiring and dangerous. Remember that the islands are home to mako and reef tip sharks, among others.

We spent half a day on Chinaman’s Hat last Dec. It was a piece of cake to kayak out, and the swim wasn’t bad (w fins) Not really a beach to speak of, and it was covered in ants, but my hubby climbed to the top, and it was cool to have an island all to ourselves. Its fun, just for the sake of knowing you did it. Take a picnic, and if you can get them, chairs.

Chinaman’s Hat is an aviary sanctuary now. There used to be places where you could rent small boats to go out there but not anymore. There really isn’t much over there anyway, just some rodents and birds. Be careful because if you get caught going/coming from there you could be ticketed and fined. Admire it from a far, buy some local artwork of it, and explore another of the wonderful areas of Oahu.

If you have a little boat or a long board you can paddle out there. When I was younger, my dad and I used to paddle out there in a little raft. It is nice, but there really isn’t much to see. If you want to explore more of a little island, go to Kailua Beach and rent a kayak then you can go and explore the islands off of Kailua beach. That is about 25 minutes away from Chinamans Hat.
